Synopsis: Lady Catherine (Bella Ramsey), a teenage girl from the 13th century in the medieval English village of Stonebridge, battles her father Sir Rollo, and encounters misogyny as he seeks to wed her to a powerful and cruel man. With the assistance of her nurse Morwenna, Birdy begins her monthly reports while keeping the information from her father as long as she can. Birdy, Lady Aislinn’s loving daughter, has seen her mother go through six pregnancies that resulted in stillbirth, therefore she has no desire to be married or start a family. This is why it’s so odd that the rest of Cushman’s novel’s economic truths are universally disregarded. In one scene, Scott’s Lord of Stonebridge describes how, as a 13-year-old, he had to wed Birdy’s mother to rescue hamlet, but Birdy interrupts him to expose him for his own financial wrongdoings. The economic realities of Lords, villages, and land rental are subtly woven into the story by Cushman to show how they are intertwined in a system that mostly the Royals at the pinnacle of the social hierarchy benefit.
