Synopsis: “Orion and the Dark” is two movies in one, beginning with the boy’s experiences in daily terror, unable to deal with problems real and imagined as he navigates elementary school. Orion is aware of his issues, sharing his fears with the audience, including caution around girls, most notably Sally, and his evening routine, which puts him, unwillingly, into contact with the night. About 15 minutes into the feature, it’s understood that adult Orion is sharing his history of fear with his daughter, Hypatia, during a bedtime story, offering a recollection of a grand adventure to help put his child to sleep. “Orion and the Dark” soon becomes a story about storytelling, as the little girl demands changes to her dad’s tale, but she responds to the core message of empowerment as Orion returns to his special evening trip in 1995.
