Synopsis: “The Good Nurse” skims the surface of some issues, such as the overly protective hospital system, and then distills its characters into a small list of distinguishable characteristics, forcing them into a thriller that, given the tendency of the genre to overdo projects like this one, does exhibit admirable restraint. A serious tonal approach should not be mistaken for profundity, though. Amy Loughren is a nurse who works at a typical hospital in New Jersey and who juggles being a single mother with her demanding profession. When it is discovered that she has a cardiac ailment for which a timely heart transplant is required, it becomes much more difficult. Because she hasn’t been at the job long enough to qualify for the health insurance she needs to deal with the diagnosis, she hides it from her superiors and continues to work. The cardiac condition gives “The Good Nurse” a sense of impending doom because it makes Amy’s pulse rate too high as a result of the tension of what is going to happen. When Amy first meets the gentle Charles Cullen, a new nurse who befriends Amy and offers to help her with her patients and even with taking care of her children, she anticipates the opposite will occur.
