Synopsis: This post-truth black comedy about a wannabe podcaster who investigates the death of a fair-weather romantic partner, by writer-director B.J. Novak benefits from his experience and command of sitcom-style humor. Novak also plays Ben, a smart, if genuinely sympathetic lead, but he does a great job behind the camera. This results in a genuine playfulness and admirable rhythm to even the most obnoxious and played-out comedy routines, such as an early scene where cocky New Yorker magazine writer Ben discusses hooking up with random ladies with John (John Mayer). They often make up for each other’s lesser talking points with “100%”, which gives a bit of a jolt to an otherwise unpleasant and self-satisfied parody of unpleasant and self-satisfied bright young things. Then again, “Revenge” also reeks of waffling on both sides, the kind that suggests Novak wants to condemn true-crime podcasts by pandering to an ideal audience one that is free from their moral dilemmas. Is aware but still listen to them. Novak is very careful to bookend the movie as a story of privilege going forward. But “Revenge” mostly concerns Ben’s attempts to reconnect with the West Texas community and family members who knew Abilene Shaw, a mysteriously dead musician and One of Ben’s many frivolous conquests.
