Synopsis: Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) begins to experience terrible experiences that she cannot explain after witnessing a peculiar, horrific episode involving a patient. In order to survive and escape her terrifying new world, Rose must face the unsettling memories that are starting to take over her life. The message Finn is trying to convey about mental illness and the stigmas associated with it is less clear, but Smile’s main goal is to terrify its audience, and it succeeds in doing so frequently and effectively. Smile manages to conjure up some quite remarkable images, like characters twisting their mouths into twisted smiles before murdering themselves in horrifying, gruesome ways. Even animals aren’t safe from Finn’s wrath. The jump scares build up rapidly yet land frequently, and Cristobal Tapia de Veer’s wonderfully eerie soundscape only heightens the atmosphere of unease. It’s sufficient to make you want to reverse that frown. when you’ve stopped wriggling.
