Synopsis: Over the next few years, as her art skills and knowledge of biology grow, Kya sends her nature drawings and research writings to a publisher, as previously encouraged by Tate, and the book to be published. The income helps him maintain his family’s wealth. The publication of Kia’s book leads to her rediscovery by her older brother Jody, now an Army veteran. He informs her that their mother wanted to find and reunite with the other children but she fell ill and died of leukemia. Jody promises to meet him when he can. By 1965, now 19 years old, Kya is drawn to a tryst by Chase Andrews, Barclays Cove’s legendary quarterback, who promises her marriage. When Kia learns that Chase is already engaged to another girl, she angrily ends their relationship. Meanwhile, Tate returns to Barclay’s Cove, wanting to apologize to Kia for leaving her and rekindle their romance, but Kya is not convinced. Chase continues to pursue Kia, wanting to continue their sexual relationship, but she rebuffs him. He then violently attacks and tries to rape her but Kya successfully fights him off and loudly vows to kill him if he doesn’t leave her alone. The threat is overheard by a local fisherman.
