Synopsis: Shot inside and around the remote fishing village of Pangnirtung, near the Arctic Circle, the first feature of the Nyla Innuksuk Slash/Back 2022 opens with a researcher taking samples of permafrost and discovering a smoking hole in the tundra. His search for it diminishes when a tent arrives and attacks him. Trapped in a town so small and remote that even Walmart won’t open a store there, the girls “borrow” a boat and cruise in a remote cabin to get around. But when a strange-looking polar bear attacks Aju (Frankie Vincent-Wolfe), things get worse. This may not be the thing, but body-jumping aliens have returned to the frozen north. And it depends on a group of indigenous girls, Maika (Tasiana Shirley), Jesse (Alexis Wolfe), Lena (Chelsea Prasky), Uki (Nalajoss Ellsworth), and Maika’s younger sister with the tag. Aju to stop them. In fact, the first thing I saw about Slash/Back 2022 had nothing to do with the story. It was the unique beauty of the Nunavut landscape and the way Guy Godfree’s cinematography compares it to the city. Pangnirtung is a collection of predefined houses and trailers that look like scorch on the landscape. Here the human being is as much an outsider as a foreigner.
