Synopsis: The main themes of Pearl are repression and the perils of romanticizing reality in favor of a fabricated “ideal.” Pearl’s favorite movie has little to do with such somber truths, despite the fact that war and disease are wreaking havoc on the planet. Photos of dancing showgirls make her fall in love. She watches their dance group, enviously wishing she could be a part of something like it, and remarks, “There’s no place for even the tiniest lack of perfection.” Pearl, however, doesn’t really meet the requirements to be one of these showgirls. A “more American,” “more blonde” candidate is preferred by casting directors. And certainly not someone with Pearl’s socially taboo cravings for a woman. While Pearl’s favorite movie may demonstrate her desire to fit in, the movie the attractive projectionist shows Pearl reveals her darkest and truest motivations. It’s pornography, overtly sexual with undertones of violence, and Pearl finds the outward expression of such hidden desires thrilling. However, she has to keep these same desires hidden from herself due to her strict upbringing from her religious mother and the strict social mores of the time, as well as the strict laws for women at the time. This perfection, however, cannot last forever, and Pearl is a grisly examination of the ways in which people can disintegrate when they are suppressed for an extended period of time.
