Synopsis: The hybrid film “Monsters” suffers from an identity crisis; Hinting from horror, mystery, period-drama, and thriller genres, it fails to capture any emotion – creating a dull 90-minute viewing experience. This is a profound lesson of “less is more” regarding indie films. “Monsters” is basically the story of Laura (Christina Ricci), an American housewife from the 1950s, running away from her abusive husband with her seven-year-old son Cody (Santino Barnard). They move to California and rent a beautiful farmhouse, decorated with some of the best and brightest offerings of the decade. Cody attends school with other local children, while Laura takes on the job of secretary. Despite the seemingly pleasant atmosphere, however, nothing is perfect in their new life. Cody is struggling to fit into school, and he and his mother are struggling to move beyond what they left behind. Oh, and there’s a supernatural creature in the nearby lake that scares them at night.
