Synopsis: I had grown weary of visiting Griselda’s world by then. The allure of her men, particularly Alberto Guerra as Dario and Martín Rodríguez as Rivi, and the innocence of her children initially captivated me. However, her story is one of unrestrained greed and cruelty, making six hours spent there feel like a substantial amount of time. There is a clear distinction between a movie like “Scarface” and a show like “Griselda.” The show does not contribute to the cartel genre through its format or plot points, but rather through the gender of its lead character. Griselda’s uniqueness as a woman is repeatedly emphasized in the show. Her gender serves as the first clue for the police to identify her, and she acknowledges it multiple times. Griselda Blanco’s femininity was historically noteworthy, although having women as cartel bosses hardly seems feminist. In recent pop culture, we have witnessed “Queen of the South” featuring not one, but two women cartel leaders – Alice Braga’s Teresa Mendoza and Veronica Falcón’s remarkable Camila Vargas. With five seasons of that immensely popular series, not to mention its Spanish-language predecessor, “Griselda” needs to offer more than just a female narco to bring something new to the table.
