Synopsis: “Drive-Away Dolls” sets a violent but wacky tone early in the picture, as The Collector, a nervous man with a briefcase, is discovered by his enemies. They do unspeakable things to his body, with the screenplay offering a little shock value in the opening minutes, but the rest of the feature isn’t unusually harsh. Instead, there’s pronounced sexuality, as Jamie has a way with women, unable to focus on just Sukie as she takes various lovers, complicating her life. Marian is also gay, but more conservative, fed up with the staleness of her life, looking forward to time in Florida reading Henry James novels. “Drive-Away Dolls” establishes urgency with the getaway, as Sukie isn’t taking the break-up well, and a misunderstanding occurs with the rental, finding slow-witted owner Curlie handing the keys over to the ladies, believing they’re the two assigned to take a specific vehicle to a specific location.
