Synopsis: Numerous retellings, including kabuki, film, and manga, have been created in Japan as a result of a 1703 incident in which 47 samurai spent two years plotting the death of their master’s killer. Its own subgenre, Chushingura, is made up of mythologized and fictionalised representations of Ronin’s heroic, bushido-friendly deeds. It endures well. The lengthy, problematic creation of this grandiloquent samurai epic—a venture plagued by reshoots, reedits, and major reworkings—has been the subject of much writing. It turns out that 47 Ronin arrives a year late, giving him plenty of time to smooth out any edges that may have existed. One almost wishes it were the gigantic turkey that its murky past darkly suggests. The film is tasteful, uninteresting, and empty, which is both better and worse than that. The affection for Keanu Reeves’ Zen-like, doe-eyed performance at the centre of magnificent action is hardwired into our brains, so it should compensate for the monotony. If only the grandiose samurai epic 47 Ronin featured even a small amount of thrilling action to make it worthwhile. To be fair, there is a lot to look at: each beautiful scene is filled with incredibly stunning cherry blossoms, seriously impressive armour, and cute manga-fied animals, all of which are complemented by John Mathieson’s sharp cinematography and Penny Rose’s luxurious kimonos. The presentation is lavish; the 3D is impressively detailed and of a technical calibre comparable to Gravity and Hugo in that format.Moviesjoy free streaming where specialist movies and tv series can be viewed.
