Synopsis: Thirteen-year-old Vesper (Raffiella Chapman) lives on an Earth in which the environment has completely collapsed. Living in a dilapidated old cabin with her bedridden father Darius (Richard Brake) who can communicate through a drone that follows his daughter around Vesper forages for food in the untamed forest while in his lab. Experiments too. When he discovers a crashed plane from the castle a fortress for the “great and good” of society – he finds the unconscious body of Camellia (Rosie McEwen). By restoring her health, she hopes this mysterious stranger will help them out of their predicament and allow them to enter the utopia of the castle. But when neighbor Jonas (Eddie Marsan) appears with nefarious plans of his own, Vesper must find a way to reverse the apocalypse. Vesper delivers a solid sense of a lived-in world, with endlessly stunning set design and consistently stunning cinematography from DOP Felixs Abrukouskas. Felixa broken planet, full of decay and destruction the dark greens of decay and the black of death constantly besiege. But there is also a strange sense of beauty, a hint of what has been lost. It creates amidst the bleakness a sense of hope, a kernel of thought that it might be possible to change for the better. The performances are generally pretty good. Chapman leads with conviction, with a toughness that belies his tender years. But she still exudes the uncertainty of a teenager, and there’s a touching vulnerability to her performance. McEwen is also excellent, managing to exude an air of mystery without being a mystery. Marson is also excellent, as always, playing the villain but with a commendable sense of moral ambiguity and giving the whole film a sense of seriousness.
