Synopsis: The setting of the story is an exclusive boarding school in 1970, where extreme privilege coexists with extreme social inequality. The audience is made aware of the fact that the wealthy students attend college while the less fortunate ones are drafted and perish in Vietnam. The focal point of the narrative is Mr. Hunham, an Ancient Civilisations teacher who is disliked by Paul Giamatti and is known for his strictness and scabrous humor. After failing a wealthy student, Mr. Hunham is punished by the headmaster and is left to supervise the students who cannot go home for Christmas. As events unfold, the “holdovers” are reduced to three individuals: Mr. Hunham, the school cook Mary, and the troubled yet intelligent student Angus.
