Synopsis: Due to numerous secretive conversations and distant gazes, Woman’s character lacks a distinct hook, leaving both Jodie Comer, a talented actress, with little to work with and viewers with little to connect to. Perhaps the story would be more captivating as a novel, delving deeper into the internal psyche and tensions of Woman’s journey. The film does pick up slightly when Woman encounters O, a fellow new mother, in a refugee camp, who brings a subtly spirited presence and attitude. While there are a few other notable actors, such as Benedict Cumberbatch and Gina McKee, their characters feel somewhat insignificant. Nonetheless, there are commendable directing choices by Belo and skillful edits by Arttu Salmi, such as the transition from the blowing of an eyelash to the sights and sounds of the rolling sea. The flashbacks of Woman and R’s initial meetings in happier times are seamlessly intertwined with the present-day events. Anna Meredith, known for her unique electronic score in Eighth Grade, which effectively blended humor and terror in a pool party scene, delivers a straightforward and moody synth score for this film.
