Synopsis: The story follows Celie’s maturation, feeling the loss of Nettie, who’s chased away by Mister, with the household dynamic eventually including Shug, a singer in need of comfort who takes a liking to Celie. The lesbian elements of their union are identified here, giving “The Color Purple” a bit more passion, and also allowing for more theatrical musical numbers. Personality also increases in the middle act, introducing Sofia and her fiery ways, unafraid to confront those daring to demean her, which gives her a sense of power, but also exposes her to the dangers of such confidence in the South during the 1920s. Masculinity is challenged and personal relationships are sorted, but storytelling is a bit iffy at times. The feature seems made for those who’ve already seen the musical, finding newcomers to the show treated to diminished roles for supporting characters, some corner-cutting with plotting, and performance broadness isn’t rethought for the cinematic undertaking, looking a little strange for a tale that deals with ghastly events happening to overwhelmed people.
