Synopsis: Doris, a teenager, finds herself in a unique situation. Despite her desire to indulge in junk food and watch terrible television, she is responsible for taking care of Max. Max’s body is deteriorating, and he requires medical assistance. He is in a semi-vegetative state and needs hospice care. Chinn, the author, adds to the confusion by introducing the story of Terri Schiavo, who is also at Suncoast. This attracts attention from crowds, protestors, and the media, further complicating the situation. Kristine, Max’s mother, simply wants a peaceful place for her son to rest. However, the quest for this peaceful resting place creates tension and discomfort for everyone involved, especially Kristine, who becomes irritable and snaps at Doris and the staff at the care home. “Suncoast” presents numerous intriguing challenges early on, with Doris struggling to handle her mother’s outbursts and her social difficulties as an outsider at a Christian private school. Although Doris is timid, she forms a connection with Paul at a restaurant. Despite initial concerns of predatory behavior, Chinn maintains a distance between Doris and the older man.
