Synopsis: Prey 2022 bills itself as an origin story about the first predatory alien to appear on Earth. It fits with the slightly older versions of the weapons wielded by the late actor Kevin Peter Hall in the first film. The Predator’s modus operandi is the same, though it’s a predator and it’s looking for trophies of Prey. This gives the creature a kind of feeling in Naru (Amber Midthunder), a young warrior who wants to hunt like the men of his tribe, including his brother, Taabe (Dakota Beavers). Naru is teased by the boys, who say that hunting is a man’s job, but we learn that she can hold her own in a fight. She’s twice as tough as she appears and three times as perceptive as the rest. Naru is the first to notice that there is a new creature on their land. Perhaps it had something to do with the blazing streak of fire he had seen in the sky earlier. Taabe can hardly bear to tag along with Naru, on a quest to find a lion that has been roaming around. They have a seamless sibling relationship that Midthunder and Beaver form almost immediately in their first scenes. Their bond heightens our anxieties when real danger looms. Naru sees and prints a skinned snake that does not belong to any known entity. She tells Taabe, “There was something scared of that lion, but she’s not in the mood for his claims that it’s a “monster from childhood stories.” Meanwhile, the hunter works to advance the animal chain, teaching a badass wolf a lesson about selling woof tickets by sticking out his spine.
