The film opens in the autumn of 1938 when Europe is on the verge of war. Adolf Hitler has readied himself for an invasion of Czechoslovakia. However, Neville Chamberlain’s administration is working hard to find a peaceful settlement. Hugh Legat, a British government official, and Paul von Hartmann, a German diplomat, fly to Munich for an emergency conference due to built-in pressure. They were both former Oxford classmates. As the talk progresses, it becomes clear that the two old friends are now in grave danger and in the heart of a politically inferior situation.
