Synopsis: While Waverly has parents, she hasn’t seen them in four years, leaving her alone to complete her medical school experience. She’s had independence in education, but her mother remains somewhat controlling, even on the other side of the planet, pushing her daughter into an opportunity for the summer, to keep her prepared for vocational challenges to come. “Float” finds Waverly dismissing such a demand, sending her into hiding with Aunt Rachel, who’s happy to house her niece, admitting that she hasn’t seen her sister in years. It’s a sense of distance and estrangement that carries throughout “Float,” which sets a cozy mood of community connection for Waverly, who’s introduced to Rachel’s circle of friends and their hang-out spot at a local bar. The new woman in town is offered comfort and even employment at the establishment when she wows the owner with her favorite cocktail. Blake is initially portrayed as a friendly neighbor who has a passion for raising backyard chickens and a genuine concern for Isabel, his teenage sister who is now under his care following the death of their parents.
