Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), a graduate student in astronomy at Michigan State University, found the first unknown object near the Earth while working with the Subaru Telescope. Her professor, Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio), predicts that a comet will strike Earth in roughly six months and will be so huge that it will trigger a global catastrophe. NASA validates Mindy’s estimates internally. Dr. Teddy Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan), chief of NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office, together with Teddy Oglethorpe, Dibiaski, and Mindy, presented their results to President Janie Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her son, Jason Orlean (Jonah Hill), Chief of Staff. Oglethorpe instructs Dibiaski and Mindy to inform the media, which they do on a morning talk program hosted by Brie Evanty and Jack Bremer. When the hosts fail to take the threat seriously, Dibiaski loses his cool and yells about it, resulting in widespread internet mockery. Dibiaski’s lover openly rejects and dumps her, whilst Beyonga Mindy receives popular praise. The true nature of the comet’s menace is rarely reported. Furthermore, NASA’s Orlean director, who has no training in aeronautics, has openly rejected the threat of a comet.
