Synopsis: Monk is a college professor struggling with his students, and he’s also an author who can’t sell books, with his material not “black” enough to help promote. Taking a break from education, Monk returns home to Massachusetts for a book festival, taking in the sight of Sinatra a popular, privileged author making a name for herself by writing about the streetwise dangers of the Black Experience. Monk also reunites with his family, connecting with sister Lisa and brother Clifford, while learning more about his mother, Agnes, who’s been diagnosed with dementia. Monk’s life is rocked when Lisa suddenly dies, leaving him to support Agnes during her time of need. Feeling inspired by a gang movie he catches on television, the writer goes to work, quickly completing “Ma Pafology,” an intentionally demeaning tale of black life.
