Synopsis: From this point on, “A Million Miles Away” follows the formula for a chronological biopic. We watch as José earns his engineering degree from the University of the Pacific and meets the lady who would eventually become his wife and the mother of his five children. Despite his coworkers’ overt bigotry, he advances in the ranks of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as an engineer. Year after year, he submits applications to the NASA space programme but is always turned down, until the year he is accepted. Adela, the family’s linchpin, is played by Salazar, who quietly steals the show with her grounded sincerity and witty comic timing. However, Pea is far too old to continue portraying this character for such a long time. When the actor, who is in his late forties, presents Hernández as a new college graduate in his early twenties while using minimal hair and makeup to make the shift plausible, it is very jarring.
