Synopsis: “Night Swim” begins in 1992, with a young girl drawn to the unknown power of the pool, pursuing a toy left in the water that belongs to her brother. The child doesn’t make it out alive, and the story jumps ahead 30 years to the saga of Ray, a former pro athlete who’s stuck in a terrible situation, feeling his strength slip away as M.S. takes over his life, putting baseball in his rearview mirror as he’s forced to confront his physical limitations. McGuire doesn’t challenge the formula, establishing the innocence of the family as they try to embrace a new beginning in Minnesota, with Eve especially ready to make a home for everyone after years of following her husband as he bounced around teams. “Night Swim” offers the interesting wrinkle of Ray’s medical diagnosis, but the rest is straightforward writing, with Izzy feeling the rush of first love with a classmate, and Elliot has performance issues in baseball, unable to live up to his father’s legacy.
