Synopsis: The Retirement Plan features tremendously exciting action sequences, dark humour, and some of Nicolas Cage’s famous Cage Rage, just as you would expect from a Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman film. However, the screenplay by Tim J. Brown provides more than that since it intersperses its action and suspense with a few unexpectedly meaningful and moving sequences. Matt is more complex than first appears. He is an assassin, yes, but he is also a poor father who is emotionally capable of admitting that he is a bad father. When Sarah, his granddaughter, asks him why he has two names, he knows how to respond without losing his cool. Then there is Bobo, who reveals to be well-versed in Shakespeare and provides Sarah with a really thought-provoking response when she asks him how he came to be a nasty guy. It is far funnier, wittier, and more enjoyable than The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, yet it is still very well executed.
